I loved Knausgaard's My Struggle series, but this is, in a way, more intimate. In the first two volumes of the quartet, he explains the world in incredible detail, from apples and wasps, to the sun and plastic bags. The third and fourth books are more about the family life around the time of his daughter's birth. Both are wonderful; I've never been more captivated by descriptions of things I already know all about.   Reviewed by Brad

The Bird King is set at the end of Muslim rule in Granada with a magical mapmaker, a concubine with the heart of a queen, an evil Spanish nun and a terrifying, charismatic Jinn. This tale of transformation reads like a fairy tale with a morality plays’ take on how power is defined and used for destruction or as a redemptive flame for freedom. Each beautifully written character strives for righteousness and to be their truest self.   Reviewed by Cynthia

I was charmed by this cozy novel and the delightfully quirky town at the center of it. Librarian Sarah Dove is dedicated to saving Dove Pond, on the brink of financial ruin. Grace Wheeler wants nothing more than to leave this town, especially with its odd tales of magic — like the librarian that talks with books. This is a feel-good, sweet-hearted read that is perfect for taking on the go.   Reviewed by Breanna

One letter, delivered 50 years too late, shocks Edie's mother into slowly revealing her past spent at Milderhurst Castle with the eccentric spinster Blythe sisters during WWII. Edie is determined to learn the truth about what happened one dark and stormy night in 1941. But the truth lies hidden in secrets kept in 'the distant hours' for decades. Equal parts romantic and gothic, this historical fiction enthralled me from page one!   Reviewed by Olivia

I'm completely obsessed. This is one of the best books I've read in years. Humanity hibernates for four months every winter, and that simple fact creates a society that is wildly unique and yet utterly recognizable. This light sci-fi romp from Jasper Fforde is charmingly absurd, with such incredible detail and thought put into the worldbuilding. I'm recommending it to absolutely everyone.   Reviewed by Genevieve

I don’t know about you, but whenever I see a new book by Helen Oyeyemi, I take notice. Gingerbread is magical and superbly lyrical look at family dynamics, legacy, and friendship that I devoured in record time. Oyeyemi’s prose is without a doubt top notch, and the way that she blends the fantastic and the mundane and makes both equally riveting is masterful. Treat yourself to this one.   Reviewed by Julia

Is there any hope of a modern Cinderella story? With fun plays on familiar tropes, this romance novel hits all the right spots. Thabiso and Naledi have fantastic chemistry that keeps this story sexy and fun with just a few steamy scenes. Alyssa Cole isn’t afraid to address some tough topics like the US foster care system and sexism, but her skilled writing keeps this Cinderella story current and perfect for the modern reader.   Reviewed by Olivia

Heller’s background as an adventure writer shows in this thriller in which the landscape is a main character. A simple story of that canoe trip would have been enjoyable but when Heller ratcheted the action up with two college kids trying to rescue a badly injured woman while navigating a wild river, a fast-moving wildfire and the woman’s attacker on their heels, I held on for the wild ride and I’m glad I did.   Reviewed by Cynthia

Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors, because she always does an exceptional job exploring contemporary moral issues. In this book, she looks at racism and challenges the reader’s knowledge and understanding of both sides of the spectrum. As usual, Small Great Things gives fair treatment to both sides; while sometimes infuriating, it’s also great because it truly lets us readers make our own judgments.   Reviewed by Katie

A story fueled by punk, confused, battered back-alley heart. Moskovich has a knack for embedding moments with unexpected, nonlinear metaphors that turn your brain in just the right way to make things come alive. Zorka, a feral child of late-Soviet emotional chaos, is an impressive character for anyone who understands a life of grimy rebellion. The literary equivalent of a My Bloody Valentine album.   Reviewed by Nick

Do you love Pride & Prejudice? Then this is the book for you! Evie Dunmore’s debut is absolutely wonderful. She blends romance with historical fiction, keeping this story relevant and engaging. By addressing timeless issues, Dunmore proves that her book is not fluff, but rather a story with heart. This book is full of witty characters, vibrant locations, and hot romance. I absolutely cannot wait for more in this series!   Reviewed by Olivia

Two girlhood friends grow estranged over the course of this novel. Messud does a mesmerizing job capturing their pre-adolescent love for each other. We are captivated by their secret adventures in the crumbling insane asylum, and the rain-filled quarry that borders their town. How quickly things change between them is all too painfully true as we watch one girl spiral into misery while the other cannot help.   Reviewed by Arsen
