Published: Riverhead Books - May 16th, 2023

I feel extremely connected to this book—as I, like Alice, had to grapple with my father's failing health and as a result, his death. The book details amazing reflections on father-daughter relationships, and the small things about the people we love that we only really appreciate when it's too late. Tell your friends and family you love them after reading this charming novel about time-travel, mortality, and the march of time.

Published: Spiegel & Grau - February 28th, 2023

One of my favorite novels of 2023. Set in Western Colorado, the author’s vivid descriptions of the area spoke to me almost as much as the story. Inspired by historical events, the novel focuses on a girl coming-of-age after her mother’s death. When she falls in love with a Native American the bigotry she experiences forces her to make some excruciating choices. Like the land, her resilience & grace are unforgettable.

Though desolate, Sven is not alone, as he finds himself in the company of a wily dog and a memorable cast of characters who enter his life when he needs them the most. We loved this stunning novel of compassion & perseverance!

ISBN: 9780063265127
Published: Harper Perennial - September 6th, 2022

While Kingsolver is best known for her novels, these short stories deserve a place on your shelf, too. Each one is about regular, everyday people who are just living their lives, and covers subjects from family relationships to prejudice to union politics. These stories are a snapshot of the world that feels true to life, and resonate long after the book is closed.

The Book of Form and Emptiness: A Novel By Ruth Ozeki Cover Image

Published: Penguin Books - June 14th, 2022

Ozeki creates a page-turner, jumping in perspective between the book itself (if books could think and talk) and a young son as he navigates grief and mental illness. The story is playful and heavy in a way that echoes other Ozeki novels. It also pokes fun at the seriousness of literature while celebrating the deep worlds and escapes books build.

I LOVED this heartwarming story of lost and lonely souls finding family, community and peace in a small coastal community in Washington state. Tova, a 70 year old widow, is not only mourning the death of her husband but also her son. Tova works the night shift at the aquarium, where she bonds with the reluctant resident Marcellus, a Giant Pacific Octopus. Mysteries are solved, families found, and broken hearts are mended.

The story begins in the late 1800’s. 5 year old Esme lives with her doting, widowed father who works as a lexicographer on the development of the OED. She goes to work with her father and hides under the tables and collects word slips that fall to the floor. She is fascinated with the words and their meanings. I loved this book for the historical context and setting, and the strong, loving, integrous characters.

Switching from present day to war torn Europe during WWII, this story follows Eva who played a vital role in helping Jewish children escape the Nazis and keeping their memory alive in the process. This is a story about a woman during a time when women did not have agency of their own. Ana is a fictionalized wife of Jesus, but this novel is not about theology, it is ultimately about her and the friends and relatives that help her along the way, and her strength, her longing for knowledge, and her defiance of the expectations placed on her as a woman during this time.

Told from different points of view each chapter, this novel does an eerie, clever job questioning the present fixation on quick fixes and technology. The story mostly centers around Pearl, a person whose job is to tell people how to make themselves happier (as regurgitated to her by a machine). Williams does an innovative job combining dystopia and entertaining relationships to create an excellent story.

What happens when you combine the New York art scene of the 1970’s, Valero motorcycles, and the Italian anti-fascist movement Autonomia? Find out in The Flamethrowers. You will enjoy this book if you like historical fiction or romance with a literary touch. I will also add that if you have ever had a hunch about the vapidity of the self-described avant-garde art scene, this book is for you.

I love this book for its interesting, likable cast of characters. Their interactions with each other amidst the political (Dad, a former mayor), social (disparity between white and black neighborhoods), and spiritual (life after death) settings say the most about who they really are. Run was written in 2007 yet the social and family issues at the center of the story are certainly relevant today.
