From Our Shelves, the BBS In-store bookclub will be reading The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides.

Are the great love stories of the nineteenth century dead? Or can there be a new story, written for today and alive to the realities of feminism, sexual freedom, prenups, and divorce? With devastating wit and an abiding understanding of and affection for his characters, Jeffrey Eugenides revives the motivating energies of the Novel, while creating a story so contemporary and fresh that it reads like the intimate journal of our own lives.

From Our Shelves Fiction Bookclub is open to the public and meets at 7pm on the fourth Tuesday of every month in the Upper North Room of Boulder Book Store. Unless otherwise noted, the author will not be present at the discussion. Please join us!

Eli Gottlieb’s previous novels, Now You See Him and The Boy Who Went Away, were widely acclaimed by reviewers. With The Face Thief, he’s written a novel that probes the wellsprings of greed and loyalty beset by temptation. Margot is a grifter making her living preying on the weaknesses of men. She is an expert in the Chinese art of face reading, and can rearrange her look and persona to fit any social situation. The Face Thief swirls a hypnotic dance of predator and prey, creating a contemporary landscape where the educated are violent, the beautiful ugly, and the well-intentioned hapless.

In local author Eleanor Brown’s The Weird Sisters, three sisters have returned to their childhood home, reuniting the eccentric Andreas family. Here, books are a passion (there is no problem a library card can't solve) and TV is something other people watch. Their father named them after the Bard's heroines and it's a lot to live up to. The sisters have a hard time communicating with their parents and their lovers, but especially with one another. Now, faced with their parents' frailty and their own personal disappointments, not even a book can solve what ails them.

Media representations of climate issues are powerful links between people's everyday experiences, and the ways in which they are discussed by scientists and policymakers. A dynamic mix of influences shape what becomes a climate 'story'. Providing a bridge between academic considerations and real world developments, Who Speaks for the Climate? by CU Professor Maxwell Boykoff helps students, academic researchers and members of the public make sense of media reporting on climate change as it explores 'who speaks for climate' and what effects this may have on the spectrum of possible responses to contemporary climate challenges.
